Upgrading to larger, wider tires is one of the most popular modifications among off-roaders, overlanders, and truck enthusiasts—not just for added ground clearance and traction, but for the bold, aggressive stance it gives the vehicle. However, while the visual and functional benefits are clear, many drivers overlook regearing to match their new setup.
Failing to re-gear can lead to reduced performance, poor fuel economy, and unnecessary strain on your drivetrain. This guide will walk you through when and why to consider re-gearing after a tire upgrade.
When you increase tire diameter, you’re effectively changing the final drive ratio. This impacts how hard your engine has to work to turn the wheels. The result is a drop in RPMs, especially at lower speeds, which can lead to:
Noticeable loss of acceleration
Reduced fuel efficiency
Transmission hunting or frequent shifting
Higher drivetrain temperatures under load
Increased wear on components like axles, driveshafts, and U-joints

Re-gearing refers to changing the ring and pinion gear ratio in your differential(s). This alters how torque is transferred from the engine to the wheels and restores the vehicle’s powerband to a usable range.
