If you're thinking about modifying your truck's stance, you're likely deciding between a leveling kit and a lift kit. Both change the look and feel of your truck, but they serve different purposes. Here's a breakdown of the most common questions we get to help you figure out which one fits your build.
A leveling kit is designed to raise the front of your truck so it sits even with the rear. From the factory, most trucks come with what's known as "rake"—the rear sits higher than the front to help with towing and hauling. A leveling kit typically adds between 1 and 2.5 inches of lift to the front only, creating a more balanced stance.
A lift kit, on the other hand, raises the entire truck—both front and rear—usually starting around 2 inches and going up from there. Lift kits often include upgraded components like new shocks, control arms, crossmembers, and more, depending on how much height you're adding.
Leveling kits are much simpler. Many can be installed at home with basic tools and minimal suspension disassembly. Lift kits are more involved and often require professional installation, especially at higher lift heights where geometry changes come into play.
Additionally, a leveling kit usually gives you enough clearance for tires up to about 33 inches. If you’re trying to run 35s or larger, a lift kit is typically required—not just for clearance, but to avoid rubbing when turning or flexing off-road.
Most quality leveling kits won’t change the ride feel much, since they typically retain your stock shocks and geometry. Lift kits, depending on brand and height, can slightly stiffen the ride or alter handling. The key is choosing a complete, high-quality lift kit designed for your truck and intended use.
Leveling kits are the budget-friendly option. You can usually get one for a few hundred dollars or less, with lower labor costs if you’re not doing the work yourself. Lift kits vary widely depending on height, brand, and whether new suspension components are included. They can range from several hundred to several thousand dollars.
If you're looking for a simple, affordable way to eliminate factory rake, improve appearance, and gain a bit of tire clearance, a leveling kit is probably the way to go. It’s ideal for daily drivers and weekend warriors who don’t need extreme clearance or articulation.
If you’re building a truck for serious off-roading, larger tires, or just want that tall, aggressive look that turns heads, a lift kit makes more sense. It also gives you more flexibility in future upgrades—like larger wheels, heavy-duty shocks, and underbody armor.
