Legends LEDs: The Comeback of Underglow & Rock Lights

By Daren Foertsch

Back in the 90s early 2000s, underglow lighting was the ultimate flex. Neon tubes lit up streets, parking lots, and car meets, turning heads and stealing attention with vibrant glows under every lowered ride. Then, like many trends, it faded into the shadows. But guess what? Underglow and rock lights are officially making a comeback—and this time, they're bigger, brighter, and tougher than ever.

What started as a street car trend has evolved into something with way more versatility. The new wave of lighting isn’t just about style (though there’s still plenty of that)—it’s also about functionality.

Enter rock lights, originally used by off-roaders to illuminate the terrain under their rigs while crawling over rocks at night. Today, they’re popping up on show trucks, daily drivers, and even SxS builds. They're tougher, waterproof, and built to survive dirt, mud, snow, and whatever else the trail throws at them.

One major reason underglow and rock lights are blowing up again? LED technology. Gone are the fragile neon tubes of the past. Now, we’ve got:

  • RGB and RGBW LEDs with millions of color options

  • Smartphone app control for easy customization and syncing

  • Music modes and dynamic patterns

  • Low power draw and longer lifespan

LEDs make it easy to add serious personality and glow to your build—without killing your battery or being a pain to install.

As with any mod, check your local laws before you hit the road. Some states allow colored lighting for off-road or show use only, while others might restrict certain colors like red or blue (commonly reserved for emergency vehicles).

The general rule of thumb? White or amber for street use, full RGB fun for off-road or show mode. Be smart about when and where you use them to avoid unwanted attention from law enforcement.

Here’s why underglow and rock lights are here to stay:

  • They’re affordable: Even high-quality kits are reasonably priced now.

  • They’re DIY-friendly: Most can be installed in a driveway with basic tools.

  • They’re attention-grabbing: Whether you're pulling into a truck meet or hitting the trails, nothing stands out like a glowing underbody.

  • They’re functional: Rock lights help you see obstacles, tools, or terrain at night—especially useful for lifted trucks or off-roaders.

At Legends Auto Parts, we’re all about mods that look the part and serve a purpose. That’s why we carry rugged, road-tested underglow and rock light kits from trusted brands that can handle real-world abuse and still turn heads at the meet.

Whether you’re building a showstopper, trail rig, or daily beast, adding some glow is one of the easiest ways to level up your build. Check out our rock light kits to bring your truck into the spotlight—literally!
