DIY Guide: McLaren CarPlay & Android Auto Module for McLaren 765LT Spider

By Daren Foertsch

If you own a McLaren 765LT Spider (or a 720S or similar), you've probably realized these supercars aren’t the most user-friendly when it comes to in-car tech. One major drawback? No native Apple CarPlay or Android Auto. Fortunately, there's a plug-and-play solution from KKS Supercar that lets you add this functionality seamlessly without any cutting, splicing, or complicated wiring!

Tools You'll Need:

  • Plastic trim removal tool
  • 7mm and 8mm sockets and ¼” ratchet
  • Velcro tape (usually included with the kit)

⚠️ Pro Tip: If you're working on a convertible model, put the top down for more light and space.

Step 1: Prep Your Workspace

  • Put the convertible top down for easier access to panels behind the seats.
  • Gather your tools and kit contents.

Step 2: Remove Interior Panels

  • Remove the fuse box cover
    • Use your plastic trim tool to gently pry it off.
  • Remove the center panel with the cargo net
    • This simply pulls away by hand.
  • Remove the top center panel behind the driver's seat
    • Carefully pull it at an angle to disengage the clips. (Clips are circled)

  • Remove the seat belt covers (both sides)
    • These are held with plastic clips. Once the center panel is off, they come out easily.

  • Disconnect the tweeters
    • After removing the seat belt panels, unplug the tweeters and set them aside.
  • Remove the large lower center panel
    • Unscrew six 7mm and 8mm bolts across the top.
    • Use your pry tool to pop out the four button clips (carefully to avoid creasing the panel).
    • The bottom is held by Velcro—gently pull and lift the panel out of the vehicle.

Step 3: Access the Head Unit

  • Remove the fiberboard panel covering the head unit
    • Take out six 7mm bolts on the bottom.
    • Unplug the connector on the bottom of the back.

Note: Convertible models may have slightly different layout here.

Step 4: Install the CarPlay Module

  • Connect antennas and harness to module
    • Screw in the provided antennas to the module.
    • Connect the large white plug on the left and the blue plug on the right as shown
  • Plug in harnesses
    • Passenger Side:
      • Unplug the large white and green factory plugs.
      • Plug them into the corresponding ports on the module harness.
      • Plug the module harness into the factory head unit.
    • Driver Side:
      • Unplug the green connector.
      • Connect it to the module harness and plug the module harness into the factory head unit.
  • Power check
    • If everything is plugged in correctly, the indicator lights on the module will turn on.
  • Mount the module
    • Use the Velcro on the bottom of the module to secure it in place behind the head unit.
  • Route the USB/update cable
    • Tuck and route it to the fuse box area for easy access in the future.

Step 5: Reassemble Interior

  • Put all panels back in reverse order
  • Pre-align holes properly to avoid forcing or damaging clips.
  • Reinstall all bolts in a criss cross pattern and press the Velcro-backed pieces firmly into place.
  • Reconnect tweeters and seat belt covers.
  • Don’t forget to replace the fuse box cover!

Step 6: Pair & Set Up CarPlay

  • Turn on your vehicle
  • Press the “Music” button on the infotainment screen.
  • Go to Bluetooth settings and pair your phone like normal.
  • Apple CarPlay should launch automatically
  • You can now easily switch between CarPlay and your native McLaren interface.

🔊 Important: To get audio from the system, ensure your phone is both paired via Bluetooth and connected to the module.

This kit is a game-changer for McLaren owners! It adds the convenience of navigation, music, hands-free calls, and more—just like you'd expect from a modern luxury vehicle!
