Cast Wheels

Cast wheels are made by pouring molten aluminum into a mold, allowing it to cool and solidify. This process is relatively straightforward and cost-effective, making cast wheels a popular choice for budget-conscious builds. There are two primary types of casting methods:

  • Gravity Casting: Molten aluminum is poured into a mold using gravity. This method is the simplest and most cost-effective but can result in a denser, heavier wheel.
  • Low-Pressure Casting: Molten aluminum is forced into the mold under pressure, improving the wheel’s density and reducing imperfections compared to gravity casting.

Forged Wheels

Forged wheels are manufactured through a much more intensive process. A solid piece of aluminum billet is subjected to extreme heat and pressure, forcing the material into the desired shape. This forging process aligns the grain of the aluminum, resulting in a wheel that is both stronger and lighter than a cast wheel of the same dimensions. After forging, the wheel undergoes precise machining to achieve its final design.

Strength and Durability

Cast Wheels

Due to the casting process the molecular structure of cast wheels is less dense, making them prone to cracking under extreme stress or impact. While they’re sufficient for everyday driving and light performance use, cast wheels are less durable for high-stress applications like track racing or off-roading.

Forged Wheels

The forging process results in a highly dense and uniform molecular structure, making forged wheels significantly stronger and more resistant to impact and bending. This superior strength allows for a thinner wheel design which contributes to weight savings and better overall performance.

Weight

Weight is a critical factor in automotive performance, as it affects acceleration, braking and handling. Forged wheels are generally lighter than cast wheels because they can be produced thinner while maintaining strength and rigidity. This weight reduction reduces unsprung mass leading to better responsiveness and improved fuel efficiency.
